For obvious reasons we're really struggling to avoid the term "dutch treat" here .... or astro turf. You see, David "Netherland" van Alphen is an artist who freely admits to being influenced by that most benighted of American decades - the 70's. What we (or most of us) regard as a sterile interlude in our culture, van Alphen sees as a beguiling era of imagery and color. That pastel wasteland, that deliberate use of iconic symbols by a consumer culture, the music that was "catchy" without being memorable, the blissfully dazed confusion of suburban purgatory - all these things are grist for his mill and the paintings/montages he creates with them reveal a hitherto undetected (or unappreciated) subtext of gentleness and humor. He makes us feel nostalgic for a period we either suffered through or barely noticed. And happily enough he does it without making us look for the nearest disco floor.
